Hand made versus casting

Hand made jewellery

Hand made jewellery requires the gold or platinum to be rolled, shaped and assembled, all of which improves the ductility and malleability of the metal and an improved durability of the final article. It almost goes without saying that a handmade item is a one off and unique.

Casting involves the pouring of the metal into a mold. The metal be it silver, gold or platinum has a fine crystalline structure and can contain gas bubbles leaving the finished product brittle and porous. The same ring can be made repeatedly.

Computer aided casting

CAD casting is a new innovation where a design is taken from a computer drawing and using a three dimensional printer a mold is eventually constructed but the final product still has all the inherent problems of traditional casting.
